Scenes from a Spider-Summit
2008-09-23 16:54:58
As has come to be the standard around these parts, I shot a little bit of video during our Spidey Summit last week, and here it is for all of you to share.

In the first video, attending are Jim McCann, Joe Kelly, Bob Gale, Mark Waid and Stephen Wacker. Joe Quesada and Dan Slott hadn’t yet arrived, and Phil Jimenez raced for cover when he saw I was brandishing a video camera.

In the second video, like something out of the first SPIDER-MAN movie (in which Phil “played” Peter Parker’s hands as he designs his costume), here’s a sneak peek at some character doodles Phil made throughout the day as we discussed different story possibilities.

And the last video shows one of our planning sheets, with some actual, factual information on it.

Doing these meetings is always like getting hit by a streetcar in a lot of ways, in that they’re jam-packed and intense, and they inevitably put us behind schedule on the actual office work that needs to be done. The good parts, though, are throwing around story ideas and making something out of nothing.

Now, cue Cool Hand Dave posting a snarky comment about how Spider-Man has been ruined…

More later.

Tom B

Uh oh
Now I feel welcome.

The world has not collapsed...although Cramer thinks a major U.S. Bank will go under in the next week.

But am not justified to complain about the direction of a character more dear to contemporary entertainment than Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny?

Is this not an art form and literature at the same time?

Is there no purity to the character that will remain untainted?

If you can change his history so easily, who's to stop an editor later retconning the death of Uncle Ben?

Is snarky not an overused buzz word for humor one does not like?

Save Bank of America going under next week, I will continue to buy the book and gripe about this current direction and I encourage others to do the same.

Make mine with 50 hard boiled eggs.

Charming! :)

I want to see Spider-Man-Wolf. Make it so.

Posted by rduarte on 2008-09-23 19:42:44
WHAT?!
Why does CoolhandDave get popularity, and I get ignored?!!! I propose constructive change too!!

...LOL! I kid! =P

So Brevoort, may I be privy to a small interview with you if it doesn't reveal too much plot information?

1. In the second video, Mephisto's world was mentioned along with the Eternals. Did Mephisto finally "screw" Spider-Man over in his deal concerning May's life in exchange for the marriage, or was this only briefly considered?

2. Mysterio was also listed at the top of a board in the largest text and underlined. Is he an alternative to any possible BND "endgames, and ultimately responsible for the "deal with Mephisto"? With Mysterio having fabricated the whole ordeal?

3. Vulture and Doc Ock were also seen in one of the videos, what role will they play in Spider-Man's future?

Truth be told
Mary Jane is a fox, a sultry, smokin' hot fox. Everyone else that gets paraded in front of un-Peter is just weak.

Gwen was smokin' too. The only thing that could replace her was MJ. Gwen is the only thing that can replace MJ.

Nuff Said.

Spider-Man in a space ship?
Leading a scrappy band of rebels against Mehpistar, a space station with the power to destroy an entire planet! Use the force, Pete...

make a movie outa that! itll top $500 million on opening weekend!

And can I just say congratulations to the BOSTON RED SOX for clinching a playoff spot tonight!!! (and the yankees suck!)

You lost me
I didn't see the one thing that would have kept me a Spider-Man and that would be to retcon this stupid BND retcon. You disregarded the fans wishes, gave us the middle finger and retconned Spidey.

Marvel, when you will get the clue: WE HATE BND. WE HATE IT!

Do your sales have to go down to ZERO in order for you to figure it out?????? Get rid of OMD/BND

I really wonder if anything interesting can ever happen in the Spidey world again. It seems that this status quo is pretty much cemented. If I had to guess, I'd say that most of the stuff at this summit will involve talk of villains or supporting cast members characterization.

Haha

Wow... I just can't wait to read about space ships and bacleor parties... /rolls eyes

"Now, cue Cool Hand Dave posting a snarky comment about how Spider-Man has been ruined…"

Was that supposed to be funny? It really wasn't. Just more sarcasm to a fan that buys the books and has passion for the comics. You may not agree with what he says but you really didn't have to single him out. I'm sure the more adult thing would have been to ignore him.

Oh well. Hope your summit went well at least and you got some new plot ideas out of it.

In all fairness
I did compare TB's "Orthodoxy" to George Lucas' philosophy on character ownership and his creative choices as Lucas has gotten older. So, I'm sorry.

That was kinda cold blooded, Lucas is a bottom barrel money grubbing bitter vile artist. He'd probably give un-Spider-man a floppy eared sidekick to appeal to a younger demographic that's probably not represented by current storytelling.

Wait..."to appeal to a younger demographic that's probably not represented by current storytelling."

Oh boy...uh...man, I do not think anyone here is vile.

Publish both in '09

This is oddly familiar...
To a story that one of the fanfic writers did in the past. One that had Spider-Man and the New Avengers (with a few fan additions) on a space ship opposing a shadow force, the one about Spidey in a space ship. Not alike, but similar.

cool
Tom, thanks for posting this. Interesting stuff! Mephisto, Vulture, and was that Doc Ock I saw? Looking forward to it all. This, at last, is *my* Spidey again and I love it.

I'm can't stop being surprise about some posters' reactions.
It will appear that OMBND and Secret Invasion had done the work that a decade of editors couldn't released :
Cap America, Iron-Man, Thor, foundamentals characters are on the top again, and the Skrull- thing will all wash the 'continuities problems' about secondary characters mis-used...

The same for Spider Man...even the jojes are pertinent...
Am I the only one to think that Mephisto is just best dramatical ressort that have ever be made on the character..aren't you interested by the demonic repercussions of all of this ?
when Mephisto's trick won't fit the universe Spidey is living with...
prepare yourself for good hallucinating.. Meanwhile, we can't blame the authors to re-blasing old Spidey's foes...
I'm very confident for SpiderMan' future 'fate, I don't understand why people can't afford some distanciating about what is coming...

If you can't take the heat...

..then ?

Doc Octopus and Vulture ?
I liked to see sketches of Doc Octopus and Vulture, I really hope the classic villains return to Spidey as well as the marriage.

controversy
Every time there is a change to the status quo of any marvel character, you will get fan complaints, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any change. What i've always loved about marvel comics is that they aren't afraid to freshen up their approach to their characters. You always know when you've hit the bullseye when there is uproar from fans about what is going on with their fave character.Keep the changes coming, keep us guessing.

Posted by stu-metallicat on 2008-09-24 17:42:57
Stu-Metallicat, you are missing a crucial point. They aren't going to keep us guessing. There will be no more status quo changes. OMD was not intended to freshen anything up. It was to reset things to the way that Quesada and company remember Spider-Man from their youth, and that is the way it is going to stay. Otherwise, I agree with your argument as it pertains to most other status quo changes throughout comics history.

Posted by theazor on 2008-09-24 23:29:13
Yeah, I'm agreeing with HiddenVorlon.
You've ruined a beloved character named Spidey with his deal with the devil, and no matter how much you try to paint over it with BND, OMD happened and won't be forgotten by ANYONE who hates this new take, which incidently is a LOT of people. And your sarcasm? It just makes it worse and the anti-BND fans hate you more. Like coolhanddave, I will NEVER stop fighting this decision, even if it takes you guys a decade to realise your mistake. I hope the majority of the Spidey fans are behind me.

Posted by Derek Metaltron on 2008-09-25 15:18:32
not only does your singling out one fan sound petty, juvenile and unprofessional, but it really ignores and diminishes what a large and loyal fan base are trying to tell you....BND is a disaster. To imply that a "small minority" dislikes the change is ludicrous. Debates about precise sales figures aside, nobody can dispute that this move has cost you literally tens of thousands of readers. I understand how everyone needs to be good little soldiers and toe the company line, but belittling and dismissing long-time passionate fans is simply bad-business. It's not even as if the majority of the Anti-BNDers are anti-split. They're just anti-lousy story-telling. The shame of it all, is that MArvel used to be anti-lousy storytelling too. I really hope that a lot of the venom towards the Anti-BNDers is because on some level, there is a certain amount of shame involved. Just my opinion....

behavior that never ceases to amaze me...
Derek Metaltron, stop throwing around words like "hate" to make your point. If you or anyone else actually "hates" Tom for OMD/BND then you need to calm down. And I do hope you can find a more worthwhile cause ti "fight for" in your life than overturning Spider-man's deal with Mephisto. Perspective, people, perspective. It's just a funny book.

Posted by chapter11studios on 2008-09-26 12:52:30
OMD had Spidey do a deal with the devil.

At some point in the future that has to be retconned. We all know this to be the case - it's one of the things which makes this all so frustrating! Marvel can't have their #1 character tarnished with some devil worshipper tag. And to think the editorial team were worried how divorce would play ..... sheesh!
